The news is gathered from global to local level, keeping our native base as the grass root location.
The news bits are selected based on the interest of the student readers and their ability of comprehension.
This is a guided work where parents or teachers have to sit with kids and explain to them in a simple manner the contents of the headlines that is of interest to children.
The intention of this element is to introduce students to current events, to gradually inculcate a habit of reading news papers and watch news on the television, to help them understand the world around them, so that slowly they start forming opinions for themselves and become responsible, independent citizens...

- Sitar Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar passed away. He was 92.His full name is Robindro Shaunkar Chowdhury. He was born at Varanasi. His auto biography is titled Raga Mala. He was India’s extraordinary global ambassador of music. He played the sitar for about 80 years and has won top honours like Grammy awards from 1967 and Bharat Ratna in 1999.
- Cost of electricity in domestic
households to go up in Kerala.Domestic consumers
who use more than 300 units of electricity should pay Rs.15 per extra unit from
15th December, 2012. This will affect about 1 lakh consumers. Power
cut for households has been withdrawn.
- Radio collars to help track straying tigers in Parambikulam
The forest
department has decided to put radio collars on all tigers that show a tendency
to encroach into human habitats near the tiger reserves. This GIS equipment will give accurate movement data of
the animal.This would apply to about 40 tigers in Parambikulam tiger reserve
and 80 in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary.
- Agni-I test a success- India test-fired Agni-I ballistic missile of 700kilometres from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. The test was successful.
- Chief Minister inaugurates Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012 The grand arts festival with more than 80 artists from 23 countries has begun at Kochi. This global carnival would go on for three months in 14 venues and 60 exhibition spaces. This is India’s first biennale.It features a blend of traditional and folk Indian art and contemporary modern art.
- Exploring Indian tradition helps Indian fellows of International studies. Professor Amitabh Mattoo is the president of the Indian Association of International Studies. In their annual meeting, he said that International studies has now become a major social discipline(subject) for India. Indians are emerging as scholars in this subject. They quickly grasp the points from western international relations and are busy exploring the Indian tradition for effective revival of best ideas from Upanishads and Mahabharata; to resolve global dilemmas.
- Messi tops… Football player Lionel Messi broke the record of German player Gerd Muellers and got maximum goals in the calendar year. At 25, he is voted world player of the year. He still plays like a teenager, said his Barcelona coach.
- Will Floris sell his ferrari? Floris Evers the Dutch hockey captain who won a silver medal in London Olympics is on a unique vacation. Presently he is in India, learning yoga and eastern philosophy. At the age of 29, he is trying to find a meaning for his life and enrich his soul. - Abu Dhabi to generate electricity from 20 lakh tones of waste says their National Energy Committee.
- Iran will discuss its nuclear ambitions with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. So another round of talks will be held at Beijing in hope of a diplomatic solution to the issue.
- Pranab Mukherjee and P.A.Sangma to contest Presidential elections in India.
- Siamese twins successfully separated by joint effort of 23 surgeons in Madhya Pradesh.
- The Red list of threatened species, prepared by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has updated survey list from India. Two plant species were reported to be extinct in the wild, including the Euphorbia mayuranthanii of Kerala. Four fish species from Kerala, including the Pookode Lake Barb and Nilgiri Mystus, are in the Critically Endangered fishes of India.
- Fire spreads in 4th, 5th, 6th storey of Maharashtra Secretariat building at Mumbai. The fire destroyed offices of the Chief Minister and his subordinate. Government claims that Adarsh flat files are in safe custody. The fire was not extinguished until late last night. Two suspected dead in the incident.
- Gujaratis celebrated their New Year yesterday all over India.
- No Classical language status for Malayalam by Kendra Sahitya Academy.
- Price hike by 30% for all necessary items including rice and medicine. Government to intervene in the market.
- Fever assumes epidemic ratios in Southern districts of Kerala.
- Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan was criticized by several speakers for his attitude and actions in the CPI (M) State committee meeting at Thiruvananthapuram. However, V.S. stood his ground and said that Neyyatinkara poll failure is only due to the general impression that CPM had a hand in TP Chandrasekharan’s murder. He also strongly demanded a change in party leadership in Kerala.

earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was experienced in different
parts of Kozhikode district and bordering
areas of Malappuram district around 2.15 p.m. on Wednesday, sending a wave of

Borewells are deep
wells which have a depth of 10 times the height of a tall man or even more,
with a small opening on the ground. These are used to get water in dry areas.
But when not in use, the mouths of such wells are not properly closed in
private wells. Children accidentally fall into such abandoned wells and die. Praful
from Kasargode died thus in 2006. A Malayalam movie Malooty is based on such a
story. Mahi from Haryana and Roshan from Kolkotta are recent victims. Uncapped
abandoned bore wells are a great threat to nearby residents.

- Hay kids, do you know the specialty of July 8th every year? Yes of course. Every year this day is celebrated as VIDEO GAMES DAY.
- God’s particle or Higgs Boson particle has been in news since a week. This was first proposed by Indian scientist Sathyendra Nath Bose and British scientist Peter Higgs. What is God’s particle? In simple words, this is the last fundamental bit of the standard model of any particle. This gives a better understanding of the structure of matter and origin of our universe. Named by Nobel winner Leon Ledderman, five thousand scientists have worked on this for fifty years.
- Europe’s tallest building “Shard” in London will be officially opened with a massive display of lights and music. This is a 310 meters tall building, with a cost of 1185 BILLION, which is one thousand one hundred and eighty five billion rupees.
- Libyans celebrated ITS FIRST election with a strong turn out for polling. This is considered as the first step towards a democratic future.

- The Naresh Chandra Committee on security reforms has recommended formation of a dedicated new agency to generate internet based information for intelligence gathering from available open sources.
- The Sunday story of The Hindu daily was on apartheid in housing sector. Generally, renting a residence is quite tedious in the major colonies of our national capital. But, now, owners deny accommodation to Muslim tenants, without any reason and logic, the story continued.
- Google has announced the list of “endangered languages” which has 53 from India! Around 197 of Indian languages are in danger. Writers call communities and state to join hands to save these dying languages.

A leopard, also known as jungle cat, was spotted at Iravam, near Konni in Pathanamthitta. This 4 year old wild animal, weighing 26 kilograms was found in a school compound. It turned violent when villagers tried to cage it and died after it was captured.

- Hotel Golden Bake at Pantheerankavu Byepass was attacked by a 20 member team of motorists wearing helmets, yesterday. Seven people including the hotel owner were injured and hospitalized. Local merchants association declared hartal to protest against the incident.

- An Egyptian couple has been charged with putting their five month old baby inside a handbag for 12 hours while traveling; due to lack of VISA. The infant was discovered during X-ray screening of luggage at Sharjah International Airport. However the infant is in good condition.
- Scientists have found the world’s oldest known cave paintings in El Castillo caves of Northwest Spain. These are 40,800 years old. Until now, the oldest cave paintings were those at Chauvet cave, in Southern France. These are 37000 years old.
- The Republic of South Sudan, a country on the continent of Africa, is the world’s youngest nation. They celebrated their first year of independence on July 9, 2012. Many flag waving festivities were hosted at the capital JUBA, as part of birthday celebration.

- K.T. Kunhammad from KPES Higher Secondary School, Kayakkodi, near Kuttiyadi, in Kozhikode and K.P. Shoukaman from Wayanad have won the inaugural national award for teachers, instituted by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development for effective and innovative use of ICT in education.
- To ensure sustainable management of tuna fish in the Indian Ocean, a project to tag the commercially-exploited fish had been launched to study its habitat, environmental preference and migratory route. 20 Yellow fin Tunas were tagged on an experimental basis off Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Lakshadweep Islands, already.

- C.D. Suneesh of the Kerala-based Ruchie Farmers Network is on a mission to educate farmers in Andhra Pradesh on growing jackfruit. Its a 500 crore INR business in our country, he opines. He is looking to trigger a ‘jackfruit revolution’ here. A rich source of nutrients, jackfruit is full of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Its medicinal properties include strengthening of immune system and its anti-cancer and anti-ulcer and anti-hypertension action. - The students of Holy Angels Convent in Thiruvananthapuram cultivated vegetables by themselves, under a novel project of the Department of Agriculture. This model will be replicated in 2400 schools all over Kerala. Integrated Vegetable Cultivation Programme was inaugurated by the Chief Minister. Holy Angel’s Convent is the first English Medium School in South India. I am proud to say that my mother is a former student of this school.
- Minister of forests, Mr.K.B.Ganeshkumar informed the State Assembly that government was proposing to draw up a master plan to revive natural forest cover. This is already active even in cities under the ‘Vana Deepti’ programme. One such scheme was being taken up in Thrissur town.
